Grandma Livingston

In the fall of 1980, I was in Seventh Grade at Star Valley Junior High School. In my Advanced English class, Mrs. Marie Gardner asked us to write an essay about a special person. I wrote my essay about my Grandma Livingston.

Annie Lavina Warren Livingston is my mother's mother. She was the most wonderful person to have as a grandmother. In today's post, I repeat below the text from the essay I wrote as a 7th grader. I also include a copy of the essay.

Note the two red-pen corrections added by Mrs. Gardner when she graded the paper. She suggests that I add a "t" to the word crocheting. However, she missed my incorrect spelling of "spiecial" and "afaghans".

Also note, at one time, I decided it was too much trouble to include the accent mark in my name when I wrote it. You can see that I did not include it with my name as I signed this paper.

I apologize to my children who do not know how to read cursive. I never liked to write in cursive writing. Thus, I always write in print. However, Mrs. Gardner REQUIRED that all of our writing in 7th grade use cursive writing. Because I preferred to print, I did not practice my cursive much and it is not easy to read what I wrote.

My essay was entered in the county fair and I earned a blue ribbon!

GRANDMA LIVINGSTON

Written by `Jon Lynn Jasperson on September 15, 1980

My grandma is a very spiecial (sic) person. She cooks many different kinds of food, she plans interesting things to do when I visit her, and she has some interesting hobbies.
Grandma cooks many good things to eat. Some of these things are: splendid oatmeal cereal, delicious fried chicken, wonderful fried fish, yummy angel food cakes, and lots of berry jams and jellies.
Grandma plans exciting things for me to do such as: fishing on Snake River, rafting on Palisades Lake, swimming, camping, and other outdoor activities.
Grandma has many hobbies. In all of her hobbies, grandma uses her hands. Sewing and crocheting are her specialties. She sews patchwork quilts, dresses for granddaughters, and patches worn out Levis. She enjoys crocheting afaghans (sic), capes, Christmas stockings, doll dresses, small purses, and even hotpads! Although grandma is eighty-one and can only see with one eye she still enjoys these things.
As you can tell from what I have written, my grandma is a very special person.
