On July 9, 2013, our oldest son Tanner left for his mission to the Brazil Porto Alegre North mission. He would travel to São Paulo Brazil to spend a few weeks in the Missionary Training Center before traveling to Porto Alegre for his assigned mission.
Tanner's flight was leaving early in the morning. The whole family went to the airport before school to send him off (except Jamie who was in Virginia on her mission). We said our goodbyes, gave Tanner big hugs, and watched Tanner go through the security checkpoint.
Easterwood Airport in College Station, TX at the time only had two gates. We could see both gates through the window. We watched Tanner go through the gate and board the plane. We then walked downstairs at the airport to watch his plane take off.
The airport personnel moved the jet bridge away from the plane. But the plane did not move. We waited and waited but the plane did not move. We eventually learned that Tanner's flight had been delayed by 1 hour. So, we sat on couches on the ground floor of the airport and looked at the airplane sitting about 50 yards away through the window. Tanner would place his hand on the inside of the airplane window. We could see it. I am sure he could see us through the window of the airport.
Finally, the plane moved away from the terminal to the runway and took off. What a relief for the family who sat for one hour watching the plane and crying.
This picture was taken before we sent Tanner to the plane. The kids were sitting on a bench while Tanner checked his luggage at the ticket counter. To me (now almost six years later), they all look so young. I am glad for pictures to remind me of what they looked like back then.
