After we finished the chores (milk cow, grain the steers, and feed the stock in the yard), we decided we wanted to cook cubed steak and fried potatoes for dinner.
We got a package of cubed steaks from the big freezer (6 steaks, each about 8-10 oz in size). We thawed the steaks in hot water in the kitchen sink. We breaded the steaks (flour, salt, and pepper) and fried them all.
While the steaks were thawing, we went to the basement to get some potatoes.
We always got potatoes from my Uncle Bud and Aunt Larue (my dad's sister). They grew potatoes on their farm in Pingree, Idaho. We would get a couple of gunny sacks full of potatoes a couple of times each year from them. The potatoes were always very large (about 5-7 inches in length). We always kept these potatoes in the basement at the bottom of the back stairs. The back stairs were made of concrete. It was always cool and dark down where we kept the potatoes.
We chose 6 of the largest potatoes we could see at the top of the gunny sack. We scrubbed them clean and then used our vegetable slicer to slice them for frying. We fried with lots of butter, salt, and pepper.
After we cooked all six potatoes and all six steaks, Cade and I ate all of the potatoes and all of the steaks. We then went to a church ice cream social and had several large bowls of ice cream with all the toppings.
