Church Callings

I have served in a number of church callings throughout my life. The following list includes every calling that I can remember. For the most part, the callings are listed in chronological order.

Thayne Ward

I lived in this ward from birth until 1982 or 1983 when the ward was split into the Thayne 1st Ward and the Thayne 2nd Ward. My first church callings were in the Aaronic Priesthood quorums.
  • Secretary in Deacon's Quorum Presidency
  • Counselor in Deacon's Quorum Presidency
  • Deacon's Quorum President
  • Secretary in Teacher's Quorum Presidency
  • Counselor in Teacher's Quorum Presidency

Thayne 2nd Ward

I lived in this ward from its creation in late 1982 or early 1983 until August 1986 when I went to BYU before my mission.
  • Teacher's Quorum President
  • Assistant to the Bishop in Priest Quorum Presidency

BYU 119th Ward (student ward)

I lived in this ward from August 1986 until December 1986. I received my mission call during the time I lived in and attended this ward.
  • Ward Executive Secretary

Germany Munich Mission

I entered the Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Provo Utah on January 14, 1987. While in the MTC, I was a member of the German Missionary Branch. I left the MTC in mid-March 1987. I arrived in Munich Germany on March 17, 1987. I was released from my mission by Stake President Kirk Dana on January 14, 1989.
  • Assistant to the President (German Missionary Branch in MTC)
  • Trainer (serving in Pforzheim - January 1988 to March 1988)
  • Mission Executive Secretary (serving in Munich Mission Office - March 1988 to November 1988)
  • District Leader (District Göppingen, serving in Schwäbisch Gmünd - November 1988 to December 1988)
  • Trainer (serving in Schwäbisch Gmünd - November 1988 to December 1988)
  • Zone Leader (serving in Stein - December 1988 to January 1989)

BYU ??? Ward (student ward)

I lived in this ward from September 1989 to December 1989. During that time, I had a job milking cows at the Vineyard Dairy every other Sunday morning (overlapping my church time). In addition, Annette and I got engaged. As a result, I seldomly attended my own ward and often attended Annette's ward, which met later in the day. I never had a church calling in this ward.

Thayne 2nd Ward

I lived in this ward from January 1989 to August 1989. However, most of that time February through June, I was on the road shearing sheep in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, and Utah. During this time, I did not attend Sunday church meetings (not a wise choice on my part). While I did attend every week in July and August, I did not have a church calling because the ward knew I was planning to go to BYU in the fall.

I lived in this ward again from January 1990 until July 1990. This was the first ward Annette and I attended after we were married. I do not remember being formally called to serve. However, that spring, I was running the ranch for Dad and living at home. Dad was at the time the Gospel Doctrine Teacher. I was the substitute teacher for Dad during this time.

BYU 98th Ward (married student ward)

Annette and I lived in this ward from July 1990 to August 1994.
  • Sunday School Teacher
  • Sunday School President
  • Elder's Quorum President
  • 2nd Counselor in Bishopric
  • 1st Counselor in Bishopric
  • Primary Teacher

Tallahassee 3rd Ward

Annette and I lived in this ward from August 1994 until May/June 1995 when the ward boundaries were realigned and we were moved to the Tallahassee 2nd Ward.
  • Secretary in Elder's Quorum
  • Young Men's President

Tallahassee 5th Ward (YSA)

I was called to serve in this young single adult ward as a counselor in the bishopric in April 1995. I was ordained as a high priest on April 11, 1995. I served in this calling until the Sunday before we moved to Oklahoma.
  • 2nd Counselor in Bishopric

Tallahassee 2nd Ward

The ward boundaries were realigned about 9 months after we moved to Tallahassee. As a result, we moved from the 3rd Ward to the 2nd Ward. I did not have a calling in the 2nd Ward because I was serving outside the ward in the Tallahassee 5th Ward bishopric. Because I was serving in this calling when the ward boundaries were shuffled and the 5th Ward met in a different church building, many members of the 2nd Ward thought I was less active. When I attended church on holidays (when the students were on vacation), many ward members would comment to Annette how nice it was that her husband attended that day with her.

Norman 2nd Ward

Annette and I lived in this ward from August 1998 to June 2005.
  • 2nd Counselor in Stake Sunday Mission Presidency (released when stake mission presidencies were discontinued by the church)
  • Seminary teacher
  • Assistant Ward Clerk over membership
  • Member of the Stake High Council
  • 2nd Counselor in Bishopric
  • Bishop (sustained January 12, 2003, and released 5 weeks after my call to the stake presidency)
  • 2nd Counselor in Stake Presidency (June 2004 to May 2005)

College Station 2nd Ward

Annette and I lived in this ward from June 2005 until June 2019. The stake presidency realigned the ward boundaries of five wards (College Station 1st, College Station 2nd, College Station 3rd, Bryan 1st, and Bryan 2nd) into four wards and changed all of the ward names to Briarcrest Ward, Riverbend Ward, Creek View Ward, and Greens Prairie Ward. During our time as members of this ward, I was called to serve outside the ward on two occasions.
