To the best of my knowledge, this story takes place in 1981 or 1982. It was summer. Uncle Jake (Jerry Clinton Jasperson) came to visit us at the ranch. He brought a woman and her two sons with him. He was either recently married to this woman or was engaged to be married to her.
It was summer and the middle of the haying season.
One day, the adults left us home to get hay from the fields and stack it in the hayshed. We were supposed to include the two visitor boys in our work. At the time, we were using the two stock trucks for hauling hay from the fields.
At one point, Cade and I were driving the Ford truck with the two visiting boys in the cab with us. The oldest boy picked up a bale hook from the floor of the truck and slammed it into the padding on the dashboard and made a hole in the dash. I was kind of astonished at his actions but did not know what to do. Then, he proceeded to withdraw the hook and poke about 15 or so holes in the dash.
A few days later, Dad called Cade and me to the truck and asked us what happened to the dashboard. We told him how our guest had used the bale hook to poke holes in the dashboard. After we finished our story, Dad asked, why did you let him do that?
I did not have an answer except stating that I did not know what to do.
Looking back, I think my dad handled it quite well. I would be livid if someone used a bale hook to poke about 15 or so holes in the top of the dashboard on one of my vehicles.
