When I was in 8th Grade, we went to an event at the Star Valley High School auditorium. I do not remember what the event was. It may have been the school musical or a talent show or an orchestra concert or something else. Two things happened at this event that are memorable to me.
First, we arrived really early for the event. We got there with enough time before the event that we were sitting in the main floor, center section, about 10 rows from the front. For most events our family attended at the high school, we arrived right at the start time for the event and usually sat in the balcony as the first floor seats were filled.
Second, while we were waiting for the event to start, my English teacher and her husband came in and sat in the row directly in front of us. I greeted her as she sat down. A few moments after she sat down, she turned around and spoke to me. She asked, “did you shower before you came tonight?”
She caught me a little of guard as I was not expecting her to speak to me. In addition, her question seemed odd to me. So, I asked her to repeat her question. Again, she asked, “did you shower before you came tonight?” I was surprised and I must have looked confused. While I stammered and tried to form a response, she continued. “I thought you must not have showered because no one is sitting in the row behind you!”
As I was still trying to figure out how to reply to her original question, it took me a moment to realize she was joking! I finally got the joke, chuckled a little, and responded that I had showered recently.
