The Sign of the Clan

When we lived in Florida, Annette and I taught Jamie and Tanner to make the "I love you" symbol with sign language. We would use it at church while I was sitting on the stand with the bishopric and they were sitting in the congregation with Annette.

Over time, we developed the practice of showing the sign at home as well. We would reach out to each other and touch hands while making the sign. We eventually started calling this the sign of the clan.

The "sign of the clan" became part of our bedtime routine. We shared this with each child as they got old enough to make the sign with their fingers and thumb. For the bedtime routine, I make the "sign of the clan" and hold it out to the child who is already in bed. They make the "sign of the clan" and hold out their hand. Then I touch my hand to their hand and say "psssss."
