Moving Mixup

When I was at the University of Oklahoma, Laszlo Tihanyi was one of the faculty members in the Management Division at the Price College of Business. We both joined the faculty at Oklahoma around the same time. In addition, Laszlo and his wife lived in the same neighborhood as us, and their son Daniel was the same age and school grade as Jamie.

A few days before the end of the semester in December 2004, Lazslo dropped by my office at the university to tell me he had recently accepted a new faculty position at Texas A&M University in the Mays Business School. After he told me some about his new position, I shared that I had also accepted a position at Texas A&M the previous week. We shared some information that we had about the Mays Business School and our excitement about the new opportunities offered at Mays.

In May 2005, Annette and I began working with a moving company to schedule our move to Texas. We picked a moving date (June 13) based on the June 14 closing date for our house in Oklahoma and the June 15 closing date for our new house in Texas. The moving company representatives came to the house to assess how much stuff we had to move and to give us the moving cost estimate.

On our moving day, the movers arrived to box and pack our stuff onto the moving truck. The movers had a 60-foot van as a moving truck when they arrived. They loaded our stuff in the front half of the van and told me they would be loading someone else's stuff into the other half of the moving truck. This person was also moving from Norman, Oklahoma to College Station, Texas, and happened to live in our same neighborhood.

You guessed it...Laszlo and his family's stuff was moving to Texas on the same moving truck as our stuff!

We closed on the house the next day and drove to Texas. After one night in a hotel, we closed on the new house and slept on an air mattress in the new house on June 15. On June 16, the movers brought our stuff to the new house and unloaded/unpacked it.

About 6 months later, I was sitting in my office at Texas A&M and Laszlo dropped by to visit me. He had a rolled-up carpet runner rug that belonged to us. Apparently, the rolled-up rug had somehow been unloaded with the Tihanyi's stuff at their house instead of with our stuff.
