Coming Around the Corner

When we were younger, Kelly, Cade, and I would ride our "bicycles" on the sidewalk and driveway around our house. Kelly would ride his red bicycle, I would ride the Big Wheel (usually without the seat back, hands on the handlebars, one foot on the platform, and the other foot pushing from behind), and Cade would ride the tricycle.

I could not find an aerial view picture of the ranch house, so I created this one to help tell this story. We would ride our bikes along the sidewalk in front of the house and to the backyard by the Tack Room. We would ride around the big trees by the Tack Room to turn around and head back to the front yard. In front of the house, we would turn by the lilac tree at the front step and drive out the sidewalk toward the mailbox, outside the fence to the driveway, and back up the driveway to the front walk.

Every kid in our family logged many miles of travel around this concrete track. While I am sure that at some point, I rode "bikes" with each sibling around this track, this particular memory only involves Kelly and Cade.

One day, we invented a game called "Coming Around the Corner." As you can see in the picture, the sidewalk has a blind corner (labeled "A" in the image). Sometimes, we would almost crash into one another coming from opposite directions on that corner while riding our bikes. So, Kelly taught us that we should yell "coming around the corner" each time we approached the corner to let whoever might be coming the other way know someone was coming.

This was super fun! After we established the protocol, we tried to race around and get far enough ahead of each other so that we would almost crash into each other.
