Homemade Baby Wipes

Shortly after Jamie was born, our ward relief society had a lesson on how to make your own baby wipes for homemaking. Annette came home from that meeting excited that we might be able to save some money by making our own baby wipes.

The teacher in the homemaking meeting had a recipe that included a mixture of water, mild liquid soap, and aloe vera. We decided that we did not need all of that fancy stuff and plain old water would work just fine for our kid's bottoms!

Thus, we launched 15+ years of making homemade baby wipes. From Jamie to Addison, the only time we used store-bought wipes was if we were traveling and ran out of wipes on the road.

To make the wipes, we bought the Bounty "select-a-size" paper towels (we tried some other brands that did not hold up as well as Bounty). Annette was very particular about the wipes we made. We could only use white paper towels. I once made the mistake of purchasing some towels with printed flowers on them. Annette used them in the kitchen instead of making wipes.

We would fold the towels in a tri-fold pattern that looked like a Z from the side. One time my dad helped us fold paper towels. He took extra time to stack the folded towels so that the end of one towel was tucked into the end of the next towel on the stack. This did not work very well.

It took about 30 minutes to fold an entire roll of paper towels into wipes. Then we would run water on them from the kitchen tap. Squeeze out the excess water and place the new wipes in the container.
