Give Said the Little Stream

When I was the bishop in Oklahoma, we had a part-member family in the ward. The wife was a member of the church but stopped going in her later teenage years before she got married. The husband was not a member. The family was a “do not contact” family. The husband had once chased the former bishop off the front porch when the bishop dropped by to meet them.

Through a series of events in their lives, the wife decided to come back to church and the husband asked the missionaries to teach him. After meeting with the missionaries for several weeks, the husband and daughter asked to be baptized.

During this time, I met with the family to get to know them better. The wife shared the following story as one of the reasons she decided to come back to church.

One day at her work, she was sitting at her desk and started humming and whistling the tune of “Give Said the Little Stream.” She had worked at this place for several years but never talked with any one about the church. One of her long-time coworkers walked by and heard her whistling the tune. He stopped and asked, “Are you a Mormon?” It turns out this man was also born as a member of the church but stopped going as a teenager. The two of them shared a few minutes sharing their memories about Primary Singing Time.

This experience combined with some other experiences prompted the sister to began thinking about coming back to church. The husband and daughter got baptized a few weeks before I was released as bishop. They all went to the Oklahoma City Temple to be sealed to one another a little more than a year later just after we moved to Texas.
