Watching the Street

When we lived in Oklahoma, Jamie and Tanner liked to climb on the fence and look over the top toward the street. On the north and east sides of our backyard, the nice side of the fence faced away from the yard. Thus, the “inside” of the fence included the horizontal stabilizing board to which the vertical fence slats were nailed.

Jamie and Tanner would climb up and stand on the middle support boards. This made them just tall enough to see over the fence and watch the street or the happenings in the empty lot behind our house.

In the spring of 2005 (the year we moved to Texas), they tied a jump rope between two fence posts to form a tightrope. (They wanted to add some adventure to the backyard!) Tanner was walking in the newly created “tightrope” and lost his balance. As he fell, one arm was over the fence and the top of the fence scraped the inside of his arm as he fell.

Fortunately, while the injury hurt, it was not much more than a scraped arm and Tanner soon recovered. He now has a scar inside his arm from the fall.
