Pippy

In addition to the name we chose to give each of our children, each child has one or more nicknames we have used for them across the years. This story is about one of the nicknames we used for Allyn for a couple of years. We started using the name when Allyn was about 18 months old and used it until she was about 3 or 4 years old.

Allyn is our third child. When she was a toddler, she liked to make messes. Some of her favorite activities included pulling all of the books off the shelf, removing all of the bowls from the cupboard, smearing her meals all over her body and table, etc. We soon learned that Allyn liked to make messes.

In our daily scripture study during that time, we read 2 Nephi 18. This chapter is one of the "Isaiah" chapters in the Book of Mormon. This chapter mentions the name "Maher-shalal-hash-baz" in verse 1 and again in verse 3 (see 2 Nephi 18:1,3). On this particular day, we noticed footnote 1b which reads "IE destruction is imminent" (see photo below).

I do not remember exactly what Allyn was doing on that day, but someone observed that "destruction is imminent" might be used to describe Allyn. So, we started using the nickname "Hash Baz" to refer to Allyn. Over the next few weeks, "Hash Baz" transitioned into "Pish Pash" because it was easier for Tanner (who was 3 or 4 years old at the time) to say. After that, "Pish Pash" transitioned into "Pippy".

Allyn loved to call herself "Pippy". In particular, as we were building our house in Oklahoma, she would often ask us to take her to see "Pippy's House".

SIDE NOTE: As I was writing this story, I got a Book of Mormon to look up the scripture reference. It happened to be a newer copy containing the 2013 version of the Book of Mormon. Footnote 1b in the 2013 edition of the book reads "HEB To speed to the spoil, he hasteneth the prey."
