I am an Eagle Scout. I received my Eagle rank advancement award in January 1984. My brothers, Cade and Cory, and I received our awards in the same court of honor.
To earn my Eagle rank, I had to complete an Eagle project. I chose to create the house numbering system for the town where I lived, Thayne Wyoming. In 1983, the town of Thayne had about 200 residents. However, the town did not have a house numbering system. Because the town was so small, everyone who lived there knew everyone who lived there. Thus, a house numbering system had not really been needed in the past.
I attended the town council meeting and proposed to create a numbering system for the town. After receiving approval, I did some research about numbering systems in different towns. Then I made some decisions such as even numbers on the North and East sides of streets and odd numbers on the South and West sides of the streets.
After that decision and creating a map of the town, my Dad and I drove around the streets of the town and wrote down the name of every resident or place of business on each street. Then I assigned a house number for each home or business. I made sure to leave spaces in the numbers for empty lots so the numbers could accommodate future growth.
I attended the town council meeting again and presented the list of residents and businesses with assigned house numbers. The town council voted to approve my plan and gave me permission to notify the residents and businesses.
The mayor wrote a letter announcing the house numbering system. I worked with the scouts in my troop to knock on the door of each residence or business and hand the owner a notice of the new number for their house/business and the letter from the mayor.
