Bagpipes in the Church

Annette and I attended the BYU 98th Ward (a married student ward) from July 1990 to August 1994. When Jamie was a baby (somewhere between 3 and 6 months as I remember), we attended a ward talent show activity.

It turned out that one member of our ward played the bagpipes. He decided to share this talent at the ward talent show. As far as bagpipe music goes, it was nice music. To me, it sounded like all other bagpipe music I have heard. It was also extremely loud in the confines of the cultural hall at the church building (see yellow arrow in the picture below).

Jamie did not appreciate this form of music. As soon as the bagpipe music started playing, Jamie started crying. Well actually, she started screaming. She did NOT like bagpipe music.

I took her out of the cultural hall. She kept on screaming. I walked down the hall away from the cultural hall. She continued to scream. I strategically walked to the farthest hallway in the building away from the gym (see green arrow in the picture below). Nothing helped. We could not get far enough away for Jamie. She just continued crying extremely loud.

The ward member continued to play and play and play. It seemed like the longest song every composed for bagpipe playing. Finally, he stopped playing.

Jamie stopped crying. I was able to go back to the cultural hall and enjoy the rest of the activity with the ward.
