We had a wonderful time in Mexico. In addition to our usual family Christmas traditions (open presents, enact the Nativity, play games, etc.), we hiked around Grandpa's house, visited La Bufadora, and went shopping in the city.
However, some of the other family members got sick with the flu. This was especially problematic because Grandpa's house was not connected to water. He had a large water tank outside the house and every couple of days, a guy with a water truck would come by and fill the tank. So, we were encouraged to not flush the toilets very often. But people were throwing up in the toilets.
We did not get sick in Mexico. However, on our return flight, everyone (all six of us) started getting sick. We flew from San Diego to Phoenix. We were supposed to have a short layover in Phoenix. However, our flight was delayed. We were in Phoenix for about 4 hours. We all had fevers and headaches. Some of the kids complained about their ears hurting.
We sat in the airport chairs and looked miserable.
Finally, our flight was called. We were actually in the air as we moved into the New Year (2001).
Annette and I were both quite sick. After landing, we crawled to the van and returned to our home in Norman. We could barely get out of bed the next morning. Finally, I got up and called our home teacher (Brother Jack Cook). Brother Cook came to our house and gave all six if us a priesthood blessing. Fortunately, we did not have to back to work or school for the rest of the week.
