This is a sad valentine's day story.
I do not know my exact age. I believe I was 5 or younger. My guess on this age range is because I think the story happened before Aunt Madalyn and Uncle Robert Newswander moved to Canada which happened when I was 5 or 6.
The Newswanders had sent valentine's cards to us. Aunt Madalyn is my mother's twin sister. Her first three children (Mike, Allison, and Brad) are the same ages as me, Cade, and Cory. The large valentine envelope sent to the family contained smaller envelopes from the cousins to us. The smaller envelopes were the typical small valentine's cards that were exchanged at school during that time.
At the time the valentines were retrieved from the mailbox that day, I happened to be going to the bathroom (the number 2 kind). I am not sure of the reasoning, but Mom came into the bathroom and sat on the edge of the tube while I was going potty. She handed me the valentine's card from Mike so that I could open it while I was sitting on the toilet.
As I opened the card, the candy heart that was inside of the envelope dropped into my lap, slipped between my legs, and fell into the toilet water. 😢
I do not remember what the valentine card looked like. I do remember the sadness I experienced because I did not get to eat the candy!
