In the early 1980s, my cousin Barbie Rich (daughter of Bud and Larue Rich) got married. At her wedding reception, a tasty drink was served in a glass with a straw. I think it was lime sherbet with 7-Up poured over it (i.e., a 7-Up float). At one point, Cade and I were standing with my Grandpa Jasperson (Clint Jasperson). Grandpa was born in March 1900. So, he was 80+ years old in this story.
While we talked, Grandpa sucked the last bit of the drink through his straw. Then, he kept sucking with a loud slurping noise coming from his straw. He made the noise go on for several seconds. Cade and I were looking at each other and smirking.
Then, Grandpa looked up at us and said, "Do you hear that sound?"
While nodding, we both replied, "Yes."
Grandpa: "Do you know what that sound means?"
Cade and me: (expecting some sort of profound wisdom) "No."
Grandpa: "It means your drink is gone."
This is one of my favorite memories of Grandpa Jasperson.
