When we lived in Oklahoma, the terrain around town had several rolling hills. Jamie and Tanner invented a game they called “high sky low dirt.” In the first year in Norman, we lived in an apartment while we decided where we wanted to buy a house. Annette and I were mostly decided that we wanted to build our own house on a lot. As a result, we spent many Sunday afternoons driving around to different neighborhoods in town to see what they were like and to look at lots.
Several of the newest neighborhoods were on the east side of Norman. To get to these neighborhoods from our apartment, we would drive on some of the long straight “section” roads that went up and down with the rolling hills.
Jamie and Tanner (I often called them J T at the time) loved to go up and down in the car on these trips. When the car started up a hill, they would say “we are going high in the sky.” When we would start down a hill, they would say, “we are going down in the dirt.” These phrases soon were shortened to “high sky” and “low dirt.”
As we drove, they would watch out the window and say “high sky” as we reached the top of a hill. Then, they would say get ready for “low dirt” as we started down. Then, when we reached the bottom of the hill, they would sing out “low dirt.”
I think they were disappointed when we purchased our lot because it was not on the east side of town with the rolling hill roads. But after we moved into our house we would still go on Sunday drives so they could play “high sky low dirt.”
