Rachel helped us find our first apartment in Orem. Leroie Woolley in the Thayne 2nd Ward told us he had a brother in Utah County that had rental apartments in Orem. We contacted him and he had an open apartment. Rachel went and checked out the apartment and approved it for us.
We were so poor. Our monthly car payment was more than our monthly rent (due to my poor decision-making in purchasing the Ford Probe before we got married.) We tried many things to live more frugally. We rode the bus to/from campus. We shopped for $10-15 per week in groceries by taking our calculator with us to “Food 4 Less.” For our first Christmas, we splurged and bought a colander to drain our noodles with when we cooked them! We ate tuna sandwiches for lunch every day. We drank powdered milk (until we calculated powdered milk cost us more per gallon than regular milk, so we stopped).
