When Jamie got old enough to eat baby food, Annette and I decided that we would make our own baby food. This decision was primarily driven by cost. We felt like it cost too much money to buy baby food.
We would buy fresh vegetables, cook them, and blend them in the Osterizer. Then we would pour or spoon the puréed veggies into ice cube trays and freeze them. After they were frozen, we would store the frozen food cubes in freezer bags (the Great Value brand not the Ziploc brand).
When it was time to feed Jamie, we would thaw one or two food cubes for her to eat. We followed this same tradition for all the kids. The only exception was when we traveled. We would buy baby food for our trips. Also, Tate and Addison had less homemade baby food as babies when compared to the older kids.
We had a few mishaps over the years. Like the time we were making broccoli and forgot to put the lid on the Osterizer before pushing the start button. As you can imagine, we had broccoli on all the walls and ceiling.
We also had a time when we did not have a microwave. We would thaw the frozen food cubes on a plate placed over the toaster.
We made the foods you would expect (e.g., carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, green beans, apples, bananas, pears, etc.). We tried brussel sprouts. Not successful because the sprouts did not purée. Okra was another unsuccessful experiment.
