Size and Perspective - Denver Stock Show

In December 1977, I was in the fourth grade. Dad learned about a horse-pulling contest associated with the Denver Stock Show (it is now called the National Western Stock Show). I previously wrote about driving in a blizzard with Dad and Cade to the stock show.

This story is about a couple of memories from the trip.

One day, Dad wanted to watch the horse shows. We went early to the coliseum arena. Sitting for hours watching the horse show was not that fun for a 9-year-old (Cade) and a 10-year-old (me). Our attention span soon reached its limit. Dad's patience soon reached its limit. Dad told us to play in the concourse.

We decided we would run around the entire concourse. We started running. We ran and ran and ran. We stopped and walked through a portal door to see if we had made it around the concourse and back to Dad.

We were not even halfway around!

We went back to the concourse. This time, we just walked. We walked and walked and walked. Then, we stopped to check on our progress. We were still not back to Dad. We were about 2/3 of the way around.

Finally, what seemed like hours later, we made it back to the portal where Dad was sitting. We returned to sitting beside him.

Running around the concourse was tiring!

I have never been back to the Denver Coliseum. In my mind, it is still GIGANTIC! It seats about 10,000.

Whenever I go to a different arena (e.g., BYU Marriott Center, Leon County Civic Center, Lloyd Noble Center, and Reed Arena to name a few), I think back to December 1977 when I went to the Denver Coliseum as a Fourth Grader.
