Popcorn on the Floor

When Annette and I were first married, we did not have much money. We were always looking for ways to stretch our dollar and pinch pennies. One of our favorite tricks was popcorn. We would pop a batch, or sometimes two, in our air popper and pour it into a big brown grocery sack. After drizzling in butter and sprinkling salt, we would fold the bag closed and shake it until everything was coated. Then we rolled the top down, set the bag on the living room floor, and sat down beside it.

Many evenings we ate popcorn while working on homework or studying for school. Sometimes it even became our supper, helping us save money. We ate a lot of popcorn in those days, but more than that, we built memories. That simple paper bag on the floor became part of our little world, just the two of us.

And even now, all these years later, we still eat popcorn together.
