The Last Meal Before Forever

On the night before Annette and I got married (May 3, 1990), we went to the Salt Lake City Temple, where Annette received her endowments. It was a special experience for me because I was able to take her through the veil for her first time.

Afterward, our two families went to dinner together. Mom and Dad, Annette and I, and her parents, Michel and Margaret Call, ate at JB’s Restaurant on the corner of South Temple and West Temple, just across the street from the Salt Lake Temple.

SIDE NOTE: JB's Family Restaurant was a familiar place for me growing up. We ate there often because Mom loved their hot fudge sundae. JB’s was there as long as I can remember, but the chain declared bankruptcy in 2019 and closed all of its restaurants.

That night we all ordered hot fudge sundaes to finish off the meal, though I do not remember what else we ate.

At the end of dinner, Michel insisted on picking up the check. With a grin, he said it was “the last time he would ever have to buy a meal for Annette.” At first, I was a little taken aback and thought, "What the heck?" as I did not realize he was joking. Of course, he ended up buying us many more dinners after that, including frequent stops at his favorite place, Chuck-a-Rama on 400 South in Salt Lake City.

It was a wonderful evening filled with anticipation for our wedding the next day and the beginning of our life together. I enjoyed getting to know Michel and Margaret better, and I was grateful for the chance to relax the night before such a big day. I was a little nervous about the wedding, but sitting there with both families sharing sundaes brought me a sense of peace and excitement about what was to come.
